The confusing thing is that sometimes we can really like someone even though we know deep down that they aren’t a good friend. Some days they’re really chatty, but other times they seem to enjoy blanking you or even actually make you feel bad. It’s so hard because there’s something there that you really like and when you are getting on you really feel like this person is your best friend in the whole wide world. (They’re probably the ones that your mum makes a face about when you mention their name.)

It’s hard when you like someone and the friendship isn’t an even balance of you liking them and them liking you. But being someone’s friend isn’t about pleasing them all the time or always doing what they want to do. If this sounds familiar and you have someone like this in your life, maybe have a think about this friendship. Particularly if they encourage you to do things that you’re not comfortable with – being mean to others, bullying, breaking school rules, doing daft stuff that you know is wrong when you’re together – and saying you’re ‘boring’ if you won’t join in. It might feel like the end of the world if you don’t do what they say and they tell you you’re no fun, or weak or you haven’t got the guts to break the rules. Chances are, though, if you have someone like this in your life they’re more of an enemy than a friend – a ‘frenemy’, in fact. If this sounds familiar, and you think one of your friends is really a frenemy, just keep an eye out. Be more careful around them – I’m not saying they are necessarily bad to be around, but if you know you can’t really trust them, listen to your instincts and don’t give them too much of yourself.

Friends should be the ones you can rely on. Good friends aren’t lovely one minute and mean the next. And really good friends should never put pressure on you to do stuff you know is wrong.
